Millennium Development Goal 5
![]() |
Target 6 Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio.
This goal is all about improving conditions for women giving birth and for young mothers. Every year more than 500,000 women die in pregnancy and childbirth and over 50 million suffer from poor reproductive health. Many pregnant women in developing countries have little or no access to health services or trained professionals, like midwifes.
Changing this situation will be the difference between life and death for many mothers and their unborn children.
