Millennium Development Goal 7
![]() |
Target 9 Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the losses of environmental resources.
Target 10 Halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water.
Target 11 Have achieved by 2020 a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers.
There is a strong link between poverty and the environment – when forests are destroyed and rivers are polluted, it’s usually the poorest people who are most affected. Water is probably the world’s more precious natural resource, yet 1.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. This adds to the spread of infectious diseases and malnutrition.
Goal 7 aims to improve the way we manage the environment to ensure that natural resources are there for many generations to come.
