1. The recent history of Palestinians since the 1940s, has been marked by wars and conflicts, forced segregation and movement of its people throughout much of the Middle East
2. However between 1994 and 2000 good progress was made on all the MDGs
   

   The poverty rate declined

   The rate of children not enrolled in primary education was reduced to under 10%. While general literacy rate rose from 84% to 89% between 1994 and 2000

   The child mortality rate and maternal mortality rate were among the lowest in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region

   Action was being taken on environmental issues

3. Since 2000 the increased Israeli occupation has reversed all the progress towards the MDGs from 1994
4. Palestine shows the need for peace and political stability, to achieve the MDGs
5. Future progress depends on the parties involved reaching a peace agreement. These are inside Palestine, Hamas and Fatah who recently formed a government of national unity together with Israel and the Quartet*
