Burnholme Community College, York
Congratulations to Burnholme Community College, York which is the first school to complete an Active Citizenship project on the MDGs using the Better by the Year website. Each class made a presentation on a different country covering: Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso and Mali.
The winning team made a powerful Presentation powerpoint on Brazil drawing heavily on information they had researched themselves on the favelos or shanty towns in Brazil. They painted a picture of poverty, gangs and drug crime which the Brazil government under President Lula needs to tackle if the MDGs are to be successfully achieved in Brazil.
Running the winners a close second were the group studying Bolivia. Using imaginative role play the group included a scene set in 2015 looking back at how things had changed for the better since the millennium. Characters used included President Evo Morales, a wealthy natural gas plant owner and a poor indigenous adult and child.
