I get pupils thinking about what influences them before they make a purchase. They play the banana game then the class moves onto looking at how big corporations exploit workers in the developing world in their drive to keep their costs down so they can compete. This includes a DVD on how workers are treated in the banana industry in Costa Rica.
The class are asked to create an information brochure or leaflet highlighting the plight of workers including children in developing countries Pupils use a series of websites in particular Better by the Year. See some examples of these ‘hard-hitting’ leaflets on this website. Ben says “the pupils enjoyed these lessons”
