A Taste of History – the Past and the Present

During the summer term Year 9 pupils from Cannon Lee secondary school in York accessed the Better by the Year website to gather key facts on modern day slavery, unfair and Fair trade. This was during a morning spent experiencing a ‘Taste of History’ which linked the transatlantic slave trade to modern day slavery, unfair and Fair trade.

After ‘meeting’ William Wilberforce and linking historical artefacts on slavery to modern objects representing both unfair and Fair trade pupils were then asked to make short group presentations on themes such as:

  • Similarities and differences between slavery today and 200 years ago
  • Where is slavery in the world today?
  • Encouraging Fair trade in school and at home.

The Better by the Year website slavery section provided a major source of information on these themes while linking them to the MDGs.

This joint workshop was one of several provided during the summer of 2007 at local schools by Centre for Global Education, York and the York Museum Service.
