Slavery

200 years ago Britain passed a law to end the slave trade. This stopped the trade in sending Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to work as slaves on plantations. But this did not end slavery and today there are over 12 million slaves around the world. There are slaves in the BbtY countries and also in the UK!

These slaves make up part of the 1 billion people living on less than a dollar a day. Ending slavery is an important part of achieving MDG 1 to halve the number of people living in extreme poverty and hunger.

Save the Children 'Eye to Eye' website provides lots of information on child labour.

For girls trafficked into domestic work, life can be isolated and lonely. They live in the families' homes but remain outsiders. While the children of the household go to school, they are forced to stay at home and work. Many children face physical violence, rape and mental abuse. Without the love and support of their own families they become traumatised and are left emotionally scarred for life. - ESAM/Anti-Slavery International
