Outline of the Scheme of Work

Before

Preparation for staff and students

CPD for staff:

  • familiarisation with content and layout of website
  • sampling activities on the MDGs and on the countries

Enrichment day

Workshops for students:

  • set context, watch extracts from Make Poverty History DVD
  • familiarisation with 8 MDGs and links to human rights, basic wants and needs
  • sample activity from at least one of countries under study, engage with its culture through drama, dance workshop

Week 1

Student introduction to MDGs and countries on website

 

  • find out about each Goal and its targets
  • look at each country home page and comparison table with UK
  • look at ‘What can I do?’ section

Weeks 2-4

Student research using the website

Each group will:

focus on one country and find out what progress it is making on the 8 Goals and what barriers exist

OR

Focus on one or more Goals find out what progress is being made in the 5 countries

OR

Have a class focus and share out roles for example to make a newspaper

To include completing at least one country or MDG-based activity

Weeks 5-6

Preparing and making a presentation

-Decide on form of presentation:

  • Powerpoint
  • Class newspaper
  • Multimedia
  • Question time debate
  • Organise an MDGs campaign in school
  • Prepare,
  • Rehearse, and
  • Make the presentations
  • Judging and assessment of the presentations

After

Making a presentation to another school(s)
Select a presentation to make to other participating schools

Note:

Schools who do not wish to or do not have time to complete the full scheme of work may wish to make pupils familiar with the MDGs and then focus on a selection of activities from the website on themes such as Fair/unfair trade, Human rights and child labour or to supplement a country study i.e. Brazil.
