Week 1 Introduction to MDGs

Starter Activities

  • ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY:
    A great initial stimulus to engage pupils is to use the Make Poverty History (MPH) DVD. Select a short extract which raise issues for discussion eg. African ‘clicks’ about one child dying globally every minute or the African family who travel to London to pay off '3rd world debt’
  • ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY:
    Wants, Needs and the MDGs: Play the UNICEF Wants and Needs card game, then match the 8 basic needs to the MDGs. Can the 8 MDGs meet the basic needs? Download the lesson plan

    CHOOSE FROM:
  • Vision of a better world: Pupils work out what age they will be in 2015 and discuss in pairs how to make the world a better place for all young people by then

  • Reality: Ana Maiba’s story This short case study from Zambia allows pupils to relate the MDGs to real people’s lives. Pupils decide which Goals would improve Ana and her children’s lives Can be used as homework or extension activity
